May is an important month for eye health awareness in Canada - and for Ocumel Canada, it is an opportunity to help bring greater attention to ocular melanoma, the importance of regular eye exams, and the experiences of Canadians affected by this rare eye cancer.
Throughout the month, national awareness initiatives are encouraging Canadians to prioritize their vision health, stay informed, and take proactive steps toward early detection and preventive care.
For Ocumel Canada, these conversations are especially important. Ocular melanoma is a rare and serious cancer that develops in the eye and often presents without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Increasing awareness remains an important step in improving understanding, access to care, and support for patients and families.

Ocular Melanoma Awareness Month
May is recognized internationally as Ocular Melanoma Awareness Month - a time to bring attention to a disease that remains widely under-recognized despite being the most common primary eye cancer in adults.
Because ocular melanoma is rare, many Canadians may be unfamiliar with the disease until it directly affects them or someone they love. Awareness efforts help encourage conversations around symptoms, eye health, early detection, and patient support.
At Ocumel Canada, our mission is to support those affected by ocular melanoma through education, advocacy, awareness, and community connection.
Vision Health Month
May is also Vision Health Month in Canada, an annual initiative focused on promoting the importance of eye health and regular vision care.

Across the country, organizations and healthcare professionals are helping Canadians better understand the role eye health plays in overall well-being. These efforts encourage people to prioritize comprehensive eye exams, recognize changes in vision, and stay informed about conditions that can affect eye health over time.
Regular eye exams can help detect a range of eye diseases and health concerns - including rare conditions such as ocular melanoma.
Ocumel Canada is proud to support broader awareness initiatives that help bring vision health into clearer focus for Canadians. Thank you to Fighting Blindness Canada for helping bring vision health into focus this month.
Supporting the GetEyeWise Campaign
This month also includes the Canadian Association of Optometrists GetEyeWise campaign, which encourages Canadians to make routine eye care part of their overall health and wellness.
The campaign highlights the importance of regular comprehensive eye exams, including dilation, which allow eye care professionals to examine the back of the eye where many serious conditions can develop without early symptoms.
For individuals living with ocular melanoma, awareness of dilated eye exams carries particular significance. Early detection can play an important role in identifying changes in eye health and supporting timely access to specialized care.
Looking Ahead
Awareness months and campaigns help create important opportunities for education, conversation, and connection - but the need for awareness continues year-round.
At Ocumel Canada, we remain committed to supporting Canadians affected by ocular melanoma while helping bring greater attention to the importance of eye health, early detection, and patient support.
Together, we can continue bringing ocular melanoma into focus. 👁️
